Ann Kipling
(BARBARA) ANN KIPLING
Ann Kipling was born in Victoria, British Columbia in 1934. She attended the Vancouver School of Art in 1955 and graduated with honours in 1960. In the early part of her career Ann had the opportunity to study with Han Zach and Herbert Seibner in Victoria in addition to attending the Institute Allende in San Miguel de Allendes, Mexico. Ann’s work transforms the media of drawing from simple technique into works of art.
Ann Kipling was granted the Bruce Audain Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. In 2008, Ann Kipling received an honorary degree from Emily Carr University of Art and Design. Kipling has established herself as an important figure in the Canadian art scene and her work can be found in public and private collections across the country.
“Drawing is exploratory. It defines and clarifies a visual idea. It is also the delight in mark making the magical connection between things seen and described, the direct encounter. When I am drawing from the figure or in the landscape, I am fascinated by the change, movement, energy and transformation of form in a seemingly static situation”.
- Ann Kipling
“After 40 years of artistic activity, we can now look back and see that Kipling has been performing in a domain that the rest of us took several decades to even sense. She has been deepening her facility over the years, and increasingly her work seems to characterize a new and valuable sensibility”.
- Glenn Allison Article, The Gallery of South Western Manitoba
