In Figures, Olson introduces a new series of paintings that play on the dynamic formal fracture of the human figure, along with abstracted portraits against bright fields of colour. Olson paints directly from Hellenistic Greek sculpture in his own remix, a kind of creative, simultaneous undoing and restructuring of classicism as we know it. Olson delves deep, taking reference from his previous body of work, the Space series, to evoke formal and psychic parallels between Greek gods and their eponymous Roman planets. Taking on Zeus and Poseidon, among others as subjects, the scale and execution of Olson’s 5 foot, 6 foot and 9 foot canvases accrue near-monolithic, colossal, certainly beyond human status.
