Abelardo Morell: Pictures in Three Museums

Edmonton Location

Friday, April 25, 2014

Abelardo Morell, best known for his Camera Obscura series opens Pictures in Three Museums on May 2nd, 2014 at the Fabric Workshop Museum in Philadelphia. For this unique exhibition, Morell photographed notable artworks from the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Barnes Foundation. Morell playfully frames and situates artworks in various institutional spaces and contexts within his photographic compositions. By situating the art objects within the specific architecture of the three institutions, Morell reconfigures the art objects and opens up new possibilities for interpretation. The exhibition runs from May 2nd to Summer 2014 in Philadelphia.

"I like photographing in museums because of the way gallery spaces can seem to “play with” the content of the pictures hanging in them. In several of these works I combined and altered art and rooms from some or all of the institutions to make a kind of art mash-up creating new and impossible museum installations, art and architecture."— Abelardo Morell
