The Mendel Art Gallery is partnering with the MacKenzie Art Gallery in organizing a major retrospective of David Thauberger’s career in 2013. David Thauberger is a nationally known artist whose artistic practice is characterized by a clear, personal aesthetic vision. This exhibition of approximately 100 important works is comprised of Thauberger’s paintings, prints and ceramics, drawn primarily from public and private collections across Canada, produced from the late 1960s to the present. This is the first major consideration of Thauberger’s work since 1988 when the MacKenzie organized David Thauberger: Paintings 1978-1988. A national tour is slated to commence in 2014.

Rather than approach the artist’s career as a linear, chronological trajectory the curators have conceived of a dynamic installation examining key themes and working processes, developed throughout Thauberger’s more than 40 years as a maker and thinker. The exhibition will be punctuated with pivotal works in the artist’s collection, ranging from Chicago Imagism, tiki mugs, to Saskatchewan folk painting.
